This key worked perfectly for my 2023 Maverick XLT hybrid. Most of the aftermarket key fobs I’ve seen for sale are Chinese clones, and the ones I’ve tried have been unreliable over time. The StratTec fobs sold by Ford dealers are the only ones I’ve seen with the blue oval Ford logo on the back, and appear to be the fob sold by NCK for about 1/6th the cost at my local dealership. FYI, my dealership parts dept could not find the correct P/N for my truck in their computer!
In my quest for a spare key fob, I learned that there are two nearly identical products sold, and most sources recommend the wrong one. Buyers should be aware of the distinction between CENTER mill keys and SIDE mill keys. It’s very easy to tell by looking at your existing key: Center mill keys have a groove machined into the center of each side of the blade. Side mill keys have a raised section here instead, with the pattern cut into the edges. The center mill keys have been used by Ford in certain models for only a few years, while the side mill keys have been in service much longer and are much more common.
These keys are nearly identical in appearance. The blade is 3 mm thick and 5.5 mm wide (6.5 mm above the shoulder) for both. HOWEVER, the tip of the side mill key is tapered in thickness while the center mill key is squared off. The taper MAY cause the wafers in the lock to jam while inserting the key. The price difference is small, so why not use the correct one? This CENTER mill flip key for the 2022-23 Maverick is Ford #164-R8269 (StratTec #5939651). The SIDE mill key sold for this vehicle by many sources is Ford #164-R8130 (StratTec #5923667) and is not really the correct part even though it may work for most people. I suspect the electronics are identical in both. Since center mill keys are fairly new, it took me a while to find a locksmith who has kept the firmware in their duplicator up-to-date for center mill keys. The cost for milling was $30 in my area.
I programmed it into my truck myself using the following procedure: Prepare 2 existing programmed keys and the new one to be programmed (label it!). Ensure that the vehicle is OFF and all doors are CLOSED. Complete the following steps within 30 seconds. Insert the 1st existing key into the column lock and turn it ON (past ACCY, but not START) for 5 seconds, then remove it. Repeat for the second programmed key. Insert the NEW machined flip key and turn it on. In a few seconds you should hear a chirp/beep and see the message “Key Program Successful”. Test all keys on remote entry and starting the engine. If this fails, wait a minute with key off and retry.
