Subaru Key Fob Remote Step-By-Step How To Programming Instructions

Minutes 5 minutes

  1. Enter Programming Mode – Step 1

    CLOSE ALL doors, UNLOCK ALL doors, PUSH your foot on the brake pedal.

  2. Enter Programming Mode – Step 2

    INSERT key into the Ignition and TURN to the ON position and back to OFF.

  3. Enter Programming Mode – Step 3

    REPEAT this step 9 times (total of 10 times) UNTIL the vehicle’s horn goes off 1 time.

  4. Enter Programming Mode – Step 4

    OPEN and CLOSE Driver’s door.

  5. Program Remote(s)

    PRESS the LOCK button on the remote to be programmed 1 time. Horn will go off indicating successful programming.

  6. Program Additional Remote(s)

    REPEAT Steps 4-5 to program any additional remotes to the vehicle.

  7. Exit Programming Mode

    REMOVE key from Ignition and the vehicle should respond by honking the horn 3 times to signal EXIT from Programming Mode.

  8. Test Remote(s)

    TEST all remotes. Programming is now complete.

Programming Notes:

  • Verify the following prior to following these instructions:
    • Your vehicle is equipped with keyless entry, and
    • You have a key fob remote that is compatible with your vehicle.
  • Obtain ALL remote transmitters for this vehicle.
  • Alternatives:
    • For some Subaru models, you do NOT need to put your foot on the brake pedal.
    • For some Subaru models, you will need to complete MORE than 10 ON/OFF turns to enter Programming Mode. Just keep going until the horn goes off indicating successful entry into Programming Mode.

SUBARU KEY FOB REMOTES STEP-BY-STEP HOW TO PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
PRIMARY INSTRUCTIONS (TRY FIRST)

(FOR REMOTE HEAD KEY FOBS – THIS COVERS THE REMOTE PORTION)

Minutes 5 minutes

  1. Enter Programming Mode – Step 1

    CLOSE ALL doors, UNLOCK ALL doors.

  2. Enter Programming Mode – Step 2

    OPEN and CLOSE Driver’s door.

  3. Enter Programming Mode – Step 3

    INSERT key into the Ignition and TURN from the LOCK position to the ON position and back to LOCK.

  4. Enter Programming Mode – Step 4

    REPEAT this step 9 times (total of 10 times in 15 seconds) UNTIL the vehicle’s horn goes off 1 time.

  5. Enter Programming Mode – Step 5

    OPEN and CLOSE Driver’s door.

  6. Program Remote(s)

    PRESS ANY button on the remote to be programmed 1 time. Horn will go off 2 times indicating successful programming.

  7. Program Additional Remote(s)

    REPEAT Steps 5-6 to program any additional remotes to the vehicle. REPEAT these steps a total of 4 times with existing remote(s) in order to ERASE any previous remotes from the vehicle’s memory.

  8. Exit Programming Mode

    REMOVE key from Ignition and the vehicle should respond by honking the horn 3 times to signal EXIT from Programming Mode.

  9. Test Remote(s)

    TEST all remotes. Programming is now complete.

  • This procedure will ONLY program the remote portion of a remote head key. The transponder key used to start the vehicle will need to be programmed by a professional Automotive Locksmith.

SECONDARY INSTRUCTIONS

(FOR REMOTE HEAD KEY FOBS – THIS COVERS THE REMOTE PORTION)

Minutes 5 minutes

  1. Enter Programming Mode – Step 1

    SIT in the Driver’s seat and CLOSE ALL doors.

  2. Enter Programming Mode – Step 2

    OPEN and CLOSE Driver’s door.

  3. Enter Programming Mode – Step 3

    WITHIN 15 seconds:

    INSERT key into the Ignition and TURN from the LOCK position to the ON position and back to LOCK.

    REPEAT 9 times (total of 10 times).

    Vehicle will EMIT an audible tone 1 time and the interior lights will flash to signal successful entry into Programming Mode.

    If this does NOT happen, get out of the vehicle and start the process over.

  4. Enter Programming Mode – Step 4

    OPEN and CLOSE Driver’s door. Vehicle will EMIT an audible tone that will last for 30 seconds.

  5. Program Remote(s) – Step 1

    BEFORE the audible tone stops, PRESS the Power Door LOCK Button (ON THE DOOR) the number of times of the LEFTMOST DIGIT of the 8-digit code that came with the remote (Press 8 times if the number is 8, press 3 times if the number is 3, etc).

  6. Program Remote(s) – Step 2

    NEXT, PRESS the Power Door UNLOCK Button.

  7. Program Remote(s) – Step 3

    THEN, PRESS the Power Door LOCK Button to match the NEXT digit in the code. REPEAT this process for EACH digit in the code from LEFT to RIGHT. After EACH digit, PUSH the Power Door Button to the UNLOCK position. DO NOT let more than 5 seconds elapse between pressing each button.

    (EXAMPLE: if the code was: 12345678, you would press LOCK once then UNLOCK / LOCK twice then UNLOCK / LOCK three times then UNLOCK, and so on.)

  8. Program Remote(s) – Step 4

    WHEN you are DONE with the sequence, PRESS the Power Door UNLOCK button ONCE.

  9. Program Remote(s) – Step 5

    WITHIN 5 seconds, DO the FULL SERIES (Steps 5-8) AGAIN. IF an ERROR occurs, start over at Step 3.

  10. Program Additional Remote(s)

    REPEAT Steps 5-8 for each additional remote to be programmed.

  11. Exit Programming Mode

    REMOVE key from Ignition to EXIT Programming Mode.

  12. Test Remote(s)

    TEST all remotes. Programming is now complete.

  • Obtain ALL remote transmitters for this vehicle.
  • This procedure will ONLY program the remote portion of a remote head key. The transponder key used to start the vehicle will need to be programmed by a professional Automotive Locksmith.
  • The keyless entry system is equipped with a code learning feature that allows you to program new transmitter codes into the system or to delete old ones.
  • The system can learn up to 4 unique transmitter codes. 
  • To register a new transmitter with the keyless entry system, it is necessary to program the transmitter’s code (identification number) into the system.  
  • IMPORTANT: A label showing the code is affixed to the bag containing the transmitter, and another is affixed to the circuit board inside the remote.  IF there is no bag, open the remote and make a note of the eight-digit number on the circuit board. IF there are two codes, only copy down the one with NUMBERS and NOT the one that includes LETTERS.
